The peculiarity of the technique

In the past, craftsmen made amazing openwork things from strips of metal. This technique was called filigree. The ancestor of the word itself is Greek. It is translated as "to twist, knot".

Similar to it was the Old Russian verb "skat," so in Russian filigree is called "skan.

But even a simple twine can create fantastic patterns; you need to be patient and diligent. Obtained only from jute filigree threads are twisted and spun together, forming an airy pattern. To fix it glue is used.

Sketches take either ready-made, or invent themselves, if you have some experience in this direction. Having chosen a pattern, prepare a stencil, transfer it to the surface.

To perform an ornament there are two ways:

  • Blotting the outline of the pattern. Even beginners will cope with this.
  • Drenching both the pattern and the thread.
  • The glue is soaked in small areas of the rope, so that it does not dry quickly. Then they start to form preconceived elements. The main thing in this case is speed. If the jute is dry, then the glue is applied. Using an ordinary toothpick, the glue is smoothed over the previously prepared sketch, and the elements are applied, using tweezers. Patterns are made by helping with the awl.

When the work is done, begin to dry the product. Objects that do not have volume, put for 6 hours under something heavy, be sure to put planks between them. Volumetric items are left to dry without tools.

Then clean the product from excess glue. Using a stationery knife, carefully get rid of large remnants, and between the patterns use a heated needle.

The finished product is coated with acrylic varnish for durability. If the product consisted of several parts, all this is assembled together, and then decorated with beads, beads, marbles.

Materials and tools for work

For jute filigree you will need:

  • jute;
  • glue;
  • scissors;
  • tweezers;
  • toothpicks or wooden shish kebab sticks;

Jute

This is the most important material for work. Represents a linen thread, which is intended for use in the home or in construction, so you can buy jute in any store for repairs or hardware store.

The thread is grayish in color, twisted from several fibers, a little shaggy. This material easily takes different shapes, can be dyed, acquires stiffness.

Twine differs in diameter, for filigree should choose a twist of two strands. Preference should be given to rope in bobbins, not tubs. This is due to the quality of the threads and the winding.

Before work, it is recommended to wash the material, it will help to avoid a gray stain on the hands, wash out all foreign particles in the form of sticks and grains.

And the rope itself will become round and less fluffy, it will be more convenient to work. To do this, the twine is coiled in a sheaf, put in a solution with powder for 1-2 hours, then you can rub it a little, take it out and hang it up to dry.

Dyeing the twine is possible with acrylic paints or bleach. Also dilute in hot water food coloring with a spoonful of vinegar, dip the jute in it, and leave it for a few hours. After a while, the thread will be the color you need.

Glue

Experienced needlewomen give preference to glue like Titan. He is a transparent thick liquid with a pungent odor. When solidified, it becomes invisible, it is easily applied, dries quickly, and is perfectly distributed on film and other surfaces.

Jute filigree for beginners: schemes of patterns and stencils

Without a pre-drawn pattern and stencil, it is difficult to form the necessary curls. Therefore, before proceeding to the manufacture, it is necessary to think of or take ready-made ornaments, having made sketches on paper.

For convenience, A4 paper is taken and inserted into a multiphorn of the same size. It allows patterns to be well fixed, does not shift and does not crumple.

To create a stencil, imagination and components in the form of:

  • blank paper;
  • a pencil and a felt-tip pen;
  • eraser.

Conditions for creating a stencil:

  1. If you don't have your own ideas, books or the Internet can help. Knowing the basic elements, in the future it will not be difficult to come up with your own sketch.
  2. For beginners, it is better to draw patterns with a pencil, correct them by removing unnecessary elements with an eraser. The finished drawing is outlined, using a felt-tip pen.
  3. If the future construction of jute will be three-dimensional in one thread, the pattern should have enough density to make the product durable. If you use jute ribbons, you can give more airiness to the ajour as the product will be stiff.
  4. The lines of the pattern should be bold so that the stencil can be viewed well through the tape.
  5. Drawing the pattern, you need to consider symmetry, but you can stick to your idea, so that everything looks harmonious.

If you cannot draw your stencil the first time, do not despair, a little training, and the pattern is ready.
