Handmade robot crafts: ideas for decorations and step by step instructions of improvised materials for children
Robot construction - a fascinating activity for real men. And let the man is still very young, so after all the robot will be a prototype, rather, a toy. And for the layout does not matter what materials it will be made of, the main thing - the realization of the idea, its material embodiment.
Ideas for handmade robot crafts
Young children usually imagine a robot as a clumsy creature made of geometric shapes.
Older children have already played computer games and seen cartoons with robot characters, so they have a broader idea of the purpose and appearance of automatic devices.
Children can make wheeled, tracked and walking models, such as a moon rover or self-propelled car. However, both kids and teenagers are more attracted to building android robots or animal robots.
Paper robot
The easiest way to make a flat figure is in the technique of applique. Flat applique consists of geometric shapes of two colors.
From paper of one color to cut out:
- 5x5 cm square for the head;
- a rectangle 7x10 cm for the body;
- two semicircles with a radius of 2.5 cm for the feet;
- The hands can be made oval or horseshoe-shaped, the size is arbitrary.
Step-by-step making:
- From paper of contrasting color cut four strips 1 cm wide and 4-5 cm long. These will be the arms and legs.
- Glue to the side and bottom of the body, and glue on the ends of the hands and feet.
- It remains to make a rectangular or square "ears", cut round eyes, a triangular mouth. Obtained brutal rectangular robot.
- If desired, you can attach antennas to the head, and place the control levers on the body.
- If the levers are made from buttons or bottle caps, you get three-dimensional applique-toy.
The older children, the more interesting applications: robot figures consist of many parts or even a volume box, and as a background used any story, for example, space.
A more complex option is a figure that knows how to walk. To make it, you will need double-sided paper:
- Step 1: divide the sheet into two identical rectangles. From one make the legs, resembling a spring. Fold the paper lengthwise in half and again lengthwise in half, or draw a line parallel to the first fold with a pencil. Armed with scissors, cut the fringe from the center to the drawn line. Unfold the rectangle, dab the uncut side with glue, put it on the other uncut side. Should get a long pyramid (like a blank for a Christmas lantern).
- Phase 2: from the remaining paper rectangle cut one 1-2 cm wide strip for future hands and a 5-6 cm wide strip for the torso. Glue the hands to the body so that the figure resembles a cross with a crossbar at the top.
- Step 3: Assembly. Legs to give the shape of a semicircle, torso as a wrap around the legs, glue to the top cut. From the remnants of paper to cut a square head, antenna, arms, pincers, draw eyes, mouth, rivets. It is desirable to connect the torso to the legs with masking tape or glue.
- Step 4: animation. Glue a skewer to the "legs", thanks to which the toy will move.
The robot from cardboard
For a cardboard figure, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:
- a stationery knife or scissors;
- PVA glue;
- awl or gypsy needle;
- felt-tip pens;
- colored paper.
Sometimes it is more convenient to use bank rubber bands to connect the parts:
- First, print the chosen template on plain office paper and glue it to the cardboard. Wait for complete drying, and then proceed to cut out parts and make the necessary holes.
- Important: on the reamers, usually dotted lines indicate where the folds are marked, and solid lines - the cuts.
- For bending, it is desirable to use a ruler. The more even the bend, the more aesthetically pleasing the result will be.
- Assemble the parts, glue them together, and, if necessary, supplement them with elements from cocktail tubes, construction nuts, LEDs.
Some models of cardboard mechanical androids can move.
From foil
Foil is a fertile material for creativity. It is easy to cut, twist, fold, it is not afraid of tears, as they are easily masked. Also, the appearance of foil resembles metal.
To make figurines will need:
- plasticine;
- toothpicks;
- an oval base made of foam plastic or a plastic case from a chocolate egg;
- glue gun;
- Buttons or small round batteries.
Making Algorithm:
- Roll 8 identical balls of plasticine for the feet and 8 smaller balls for the hands. Wrap each ball and the base with foil.
- On toothpicks string 4 balls of the same size.
- Use hot melt glue to glue the arms and legs to the base.
- Make a large plasticine ball for the head, wrap it in foil, attach the battery eyes.
- Twist shiny antenna antenna antennae. Complete with weapons.
Instead of legs can be used tracks from a tractor, wheels or bottle caps.
Made of felt
To make a soft, charming felt robot-sized baby, sewing skills will be useful. Such a handicraft, most likely, will want to make girls. It is fortunate that the toy can always find a practical application, for example, instead of an needle holder or a place to store small hairpins.
So, for the craft to take:
- A sheet of felt or a piece of overcoat fabric;
- silk thread or fine yarn, such as crusher;
- A big needle;
- synthetics or absorbent cotton;
- small buttons, rhinestones, satin ribbons for decoration.
To make a robot out of felt, follow these steps:
- For the head, cut 6 squares 5x5 cm, stitch all edges, forming a cube, leaving one open for stuffing. Stuff with hemp and trim the remaining edge.
- Similarly, sew 4 smaller cubes, for example 4x4 cm. These will be the arms and legs.
- Sew a rectangular torso of four rectangles 4x10 cm and two squares 4x4 cm. To the rectangle, which will be in front, sew a pocket-dashboard.
- To the front of the head to sew on buttons or glue the eyes-pearls. Instead of ears can be used small felt pads, parts of the designer, bottles, which were sold glitter for creativity.
- For the assembly cut four felt strips of length 10 cm and a width of 1 to 1.5 cm.
- The edges of the strips sew on the sides of the body just below the head, then a hint stitch strip along, a little pull the thread to make the felt took the form of a wave, sew cubes of the hands.
- Similarly, arrange the legs, sewing felt stripes to the front bottom edge of the toy. Attachment of parts on buttons is possible.
The felt robot can hardly be imagined as a soldier, it is more likely to be a babysitter, an administrator in a hotel, so the decor should correspond to the idea. Bows, bonnets, or aprons are good for the nanny, and a tie, hat, or patch with the logo for the administrator.
A simpler version is to cut a rectangle out of felt, make a slit for the legs, stitch, stuff with cotton, glue fabric eyes, hands, nose, decorate the front with control buttons made of round multi-colored elements of cardboard or fabric elements.
Lego
Lego constructions consist of many parts that can be attached to each other not only according to the attached schemes, but also arbitrarily.
The algorithm of manufacture in any case prescribes to start the assembly with the feet:
- They are made of square or rectangular parts.
- Next, the large parts for the legs are attached. Once the legs are the desired length, they need to connect a rectangular piece, which will serve as the base for the body.
- The lower part of the body can be narrow, but the chest and shoulders - wider.
- Hands and head are attached to the shoulders.
- Give a gun in his hands or attach a whole arsenal to his arms, back, and shoulders. If you "put" the model on a wheel, you get a robot on a motorcycle.
A robot from improvised materials
Whatever you can get your hands on and what is leftovers can make cool things. Old T-shirt or unnecessary jeans, broken alarm clock, a box from a laptop - all this turns into unusual toys, such as cyborgs or smart cars-helpers.
From a cardboard box
From different sized cardboard boxes you can make a human-sized robot, but it is more convenient to work with the model from milk cartons, medicine boxes, shoe boxes.
If the boxes without pictures and labels, you can collect the craft without the use of decorative colored paper, holographic film, unnecessary wallpaper:
- Boxes of food must be pasted over with solid colored paper.
- The boxes are glued together so that a cyborg can be guessed in silhouette. Antennas, weapons, tools, remote control - all these can also be made out of boxes or sheets of cardboard.
- For an elementary figure, take two boxes: the largest will be the torso, the smaller will be the head.
- The neck is made from an empty duct tape reel, and the legs are made from toilet paper sleeves.
- For the arms, cut out parts from heavy cardboard, resembling a wrench.
- Embellish the body with junk disks and put a flashing beacon on the head from the bottom of a plastic bottle.
Made of metal parts
The very first association with the word robot is a metal humanoid machine that looks like characters from video games and cartoons. Then we think of tracked or wheeled models, remotely resembling animals or individual body parts, such as the manipulator arm.
To most accurately reproduce these representations, you will need scrap metal: wire, wrenches, springs, unwanted aluminum cutlery, bicycle chains, angles, and other fasteners will come in handy.
You may need to use a drill, a soldering iron or stock up on "cold welding".
Without proficiency in plumbing skills and a special workshop, of course, it is not possible to create a copy of the Terminator, but the craft will make your imagination work and find unusual solutions.
For example, you can use natural bottle corks as connecting elements for metal rods.
A robot with legs made of old aluminum spoons looks original. The spoons are easy to bend, and it is not very difficult to make holes in them. And the helmet of the future android can be an old aluminum mug, a metal strainer for brewing tea. For the torso cans will do.
A good solution is to use nuts or self-tapping screws instead of eyes, and for the hands - forks or screws-hooks. If you don't have any suitable parts, don't worry: they are easy to imitate.
You just need to wrap foil around suitable cardboard element, for example, a matchbox or paper towel sleeve.
A few more ideas:
- String metal bottle caps on wire to get movable legs or arms;
- Use an old shower hose or flexible faucet line instead of arms;
- an unnecessary metal plate is almost a ready-made robot-alien or robot-planet rover, which should be supplemented with antennas and wheels from broken cars.
From matchboxes
For this fun little robot man you need at least 15 empty matchboxes, glue, scissors, coloured paper and felt-tip pens.
The construction is assembled from pre-glued colored paper boxes:
- For the legs: glue two matchboxes with the same paper, which will serve as a base; glue two more boxes with paper of a different color. Each leg consists of two parts: a wide base of one color glued to a "standing" box of another color.
- Torso consists of two parts: the body and shoulders. For the torso to put boxes wide pieces on top of each other, glued together and glue a common colored band. Shoulders - there are four boxes: two at the base and two glued on top. These boxes also glue colored paper.
- Arms: each of the same box.
- Head: Glue two boxes together, glue round batteries instead of eyes and cut a hole for the mouth. Glue "ears" of paper triangles on the side.
- Assembly is done from the bottom up: the torso glue the legs and shoulders. Then attach the head and arms. Draw a control panel on the torso, write the word "Hello" or give the robot a flag in his hands.
The model is easily modified, it only needs to change the location of the boxes and increase or decrease their number.
From Batteries
For a robot out of batteries, you need to think of the concept. If the batteries serve only as building material, used batteries will do; if you plan a robot with electric circuitry, you'll have to take new batteries.
Variant 1 - robot android: glue a few round batteries with hot glue or scotch tape to form the body and the legs. Make the arms from pieces of wire. For the head, it is better to take a battery in a square case.
Variant 2 - robot-dog: 5 batteries in a round case - paws and head. Attach them with wire to the spiral spring. To connect the wire to the batteries you need a soldering iron with solder and rosin.
From a plastic bottle
It's no exaggeration to say that you can make anything out of bottles! A robot is no exception.
For a robot with moving parts, you will need a rubber band, a needle and an awl:
- A 0.5L hollow bottle is perfect for the body.
- You will also need a lid. Make a hole in it to attach the lid from a coffee can.
- On top, fit a cap from a yogurt box.
- To fasten one end of the rubber band through the hole in the bottle cap, the other - through the lid of the coffee can, tighten, tie knots inside each cap.
- For the arms, make two holes in the top of the bottle, pull through the rubber band, attach caps (preferably from milk bottles) to the sides, then thread a couple more small caps and finish with cut bottle necks with caps screwed onto them.
- For more resemblance to the manipulators, attach plastic rings to the bottom. The same algorithm is used to make the legs.
- For decoration, you can use foil, acrylic paint, holographic self-adhesive film.
From tin cans and spoons
Recyclables are probably called that because they need to be used a second time. And the children will gladly use it for a third time as well.
If you look closely at the tin can, it is obvious that the can is not ordinary, it is the torso of the future cyborg monster.
And the cutlery is a manipulator arm or even a robot weapon from an extraterrestrial civilization.
Use self-tapping screws, toy car chassis, round yogurt boxes or plastic cups.
Connecting the parts with self-tapping screws or twisted wire, you can get an android, a machine for exploring other planets, or an automatic spaceship with supports made of aluminum forks and spoons.
From plastic lids
Lids - a very plastic, but durable material that makes toys with moving parts and the ability to complement them with removable elements.
To make an armed robot, you will need:
- covers of two or three colors (a total of at least 22 pieces);
- awl;
- elastic band;
- thread with a big needle;
- duct tape;
- a cone-shaped cap from toothpaste;
- a cap for a ballpoint pen.
All connections will be made through holes made in the caps with an awl. To thread the rubber band through the small holes, you need to stitch one edge of the thread: rubber band will be pulled through the holes after the needle. Other edge of the rubber band tie a knot:
- For the foot, make holes in the center of the three lids, and in the fourth lid the holes should be two - the center and in the side wall.
- Thread the rubber band through the centers of the three lids and the side hole of the fourth, pull, make a knot as close as possible to the last cap, cut off, leaving a small tail. The second leg is done in the same way.
- Arms are made similarly, the only difference - the assembly begins with a cap with a side hole.
- The torso is better to make from lids of a different color. In the first and third lids you must make holes in the center, and in the second - two in the side walls so that they are opposite each other. Assemble on the rubber band, starting with the first, do not cut the rubber band yet.
- Pierce the holes in the cap, designed for the head and the cap from the toothpaste. The cap will be the neck, so the assembled body first attach the neck, and then the head. Now the rubber band can be tied and trimmed.
- It remains to connect all the parts. To do this, in the lid, which fastens the neck, make two side holes. Pass through them rubber band, which will be attached to the hands.
- In the upper lid of the hands to pierce the side hole, take another lid, pierce the bottom in the center, put a rubber band that goes through the body, first into the lid with a central hole, and then attach the hand through the side hole.
- To attach the legs, make a through hole through the side walls of the lower torso cover, make a central and side hole in the remaining two covers, attach them instead of the hips, then attach the legs.
Due to the elasticity of the rubber band, we obtained a transformer: the robot can easily change the position of its arms and legs. It remains to attach a weapon made of a ballpoint pen cap. For him, make holes in his arm or shoulder.
Options: to make a body from a plastic case from a Kinder Surprise, from a small plastic bottle.
Manual work is valuable only when a child is given the right to do everything independently, even if not very beautiful, but with soul.
The role of the adult is to provide a little help, but it is best to unobtrusively present the history of robotics. Surely the children will be surprised to learn about the mechanical knight invented in the 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci himself!
