How to make a birdhouse with their own hands - the best photo ideas and drawings from wood and improvised materials
An interesting and useful activity - to make a birdhouse with their own hands. A child in such an activity not only learns how to work with tools and wood, but also receives important knowledge about the world around them. Learning to take care of our little brothers.
It is impossible to make a birdhouse without knowledge about birds. After all, for each bird requires a different size house, the size of the perch. Some birds prefer low birdhouses, horizontally placed.
The house must be warm and comfortable. So before you start such an important matter as making a birdhouse, study carefully all the requirements for it.
Materials for a birdhouse
In order to make a warm and comfortable house for birds it is necessary to use natural materials. When using artificial materials, the birdhouse must be insulated.
Wood
It is best to work with hardwood boards. They are warm and environmentally friendly. It is better not to take plywood, fiberboard and particleboard, since they are impregnated with glue, which emits a specific smell that scares off birds. Softwood boards emit resin, which can lead to the death of birds.
Other natural materials
The natural materials used include cardboard, logs of trees, wine corks, empty pumpkins, willow twigs and other materials.
Artificial materials
The most commonly used artificial materials are plastic five-liter bottles. Juice and milk cartons are also glued on the inside with synthetic materials.
Tools for work
For the work we will need:
- A saw or electric jigsaw,
- Drill with cutters at 1 and 5 centimeters,
- Nails or screws,
- A pencil,
- A tape measure,
- Hammer or screwdriver.
Safety precautions
When working with stabbing and cutting objects, safety precautions must be observed. To do this:
- Use gloves to avoid splinters and injuries.
- Do not leave power tools plugged in after use.
- Place the saw or jigsaw with the blade down when you are finished using it.
- Use safety glasses if necessary.
- Sharpen the saw beforehand to avoid injury.
Sizes of birdhouse
Different bird species have different sizes. So before you make a birdhouse, think about what kind of tenants your house will be for. So for small birds: tits, sparrows, flycatchers and cattails birdhouse size can be done 25-30 centimeters high and 10-12 centimeters wide, the size of the flyover should be 4-5 centimeters. You can see it visually in the drawing below:
For larger birds, the height of the birdhouse is increased to 40 centimeters. The optimal thickness of boards for birdhouse should be 2 centimeters.
Birdhouse from boards
Birdhouse from boards can be made in various shapes:
- with a single roof
- with a double pitch roof
- With a hinged roof.
Birdhouse with a single roof
This variant of a birdhouse is the easiest to make. To work with a handy tool saw off planks 10-12 cm wide and 25 cm high.
We need 4 such pieces. For the bottom of the birdhouse, we saw a square equal to the width of the house wall. The roof is made 5-7 centimeters longer than the bottom of the birdhouse.
A successful drawing of a homemade birdhouse with a single sloping roof:
The pole on which the birdhouse will be attached is made 5-7 centimeters wide and up to 1 meter long. Also needed is a perch, which can be made from a twig or vysmotrov of wood.
Blanks on the outside can be sanded, but on the inside, on the contrary, it is necessary to roughen the boards. On a rough surface, it will be convenient for the chicks to climb up to the flyer. When all the necessary blanks are made, let's start assembling the house:
- On the front panel of the birdhouse, using a drill with a 5 centimeter mill, make a hole in the center of the perch at a distance of 15 centimeters from the bottom of the board.
- With a 1 centimeter cutter make a hole for the perch, below the flyer at 3-4 centimeters.
- Using a brush and carpenter's glue we glue the perch.
- Attach a pole to the back wall of the birdhouse in advance.
- Assemble the frame of the birdhouse, connecting all the walls together. To prevent the wood from cracking when nails or screws are driven into it, it is necessary to drill holes in advance.
- We attach the bottom of the house and the roof. The roof should protrude in front of the birdhouse for 5-7 centimeters. This will protect birds from precipitation and predators.
Birdhouse with a sloping roof
Birdhouse with a double slope roof looks more interesting, and the rain will not accumulate water on the roof of the house. For this type of birdhouse, you will need 2 parts for the roof.
A detailed drawing of the birdhouse that we will get:
Workflow:
- We saw out 2 parts 30 centimeters long and 16 centimeters wide for the front and back walls of the birdhouse. Two make the sides measuring 22×12. Two parts for the roof: one measuring 16×20 centimeters, the other 18×20 centimeters. The bottom for the house is made with a size of 12×12 centimeters. Calculations are made for a board thickness of 2 centimeters. The bird's tail is 4-5 centimeters long.
- On the front and back panel, mark the bevel for the roof. To do this, divide the width of the board in half and from the center draw lines with a pencil to the edges, 8 centimeters from the top. It turns out the angle for the roof. Saw it out with a jigsaw or saw.
- On the front panel make a hole for the flyer with a router 5 centimeters in diameter and a hole for the perch with a router 1 centimeter in diameter.
- Glue the perch with wood glue.
- Screw all sides of the birdhouse together and attach the bottom.
- Screw together the roof parts.
- Screw the hinges to the back of the birdhouse to hang the birdhouse.
- Screw the roof to the body of the house.
Birdhouse with hinged roof
The hinged roof birdhouse is easy to clean and disinfect. The birds in such a house will live long if you take care of it.
It is made according to the principle of a birdhouse with a single roof, only the roof is attached with a metal hinge to the back wall of the birdhouse. To do this, we mark the center of the back wall and the edge of the roof with a pencil, and screw the hinge with screws. The roof is not attached anywhere else to the frame of the house.
Birdhouses made of other natural materials
In addition to the fact that a birdhouse can be made from boards, it can be made from gourds, wine corks, woven from vines, hollowed out of an old log.
Birdhouse
A warm house for birds is made of an old log. This is the house that birds choose for themselves first of all. It is warm, without cracks and odors. To make a hollow, take a log 25-30 centimeters high and 30-35 centimeters in diameter.
The size of a boulder depends on what kind of birds you want to make the dugout for. For smaller birds you can take smaller billets.
The wood should be of hardwood, preferably aspen:
- Clean the bark off the birch bark, if it has decay spots.
- Hollow out the middle of the log in any way convenient for you, leaving a wall thickness of 2-3 centimeters.
- Cut a leak and a hole for a perch.
- Insert the perch.
- As the roof and the floor can be used board or slab. They are screwed to the frame with screws. If there are gaps, it is better to seal them with hemp or grass.
Birdhouse from wine corks
A warm birdhouse will turn out of wine corks. If you have the time and desire, you can please birds with a cozy house. You can make a birdhouse from thin boards and glue it with corks, or make a frame from slats and glue it with wine corks.
Wine corks are glued with a thermo-pistol. Corks are cut in half lengthwise and glued to the frame of the house.
The roof and floor can be covered with saw cuts of cork horizontally.
A gourd birdhouse
If you have an extra pumpkin and a desire to make a birdhouse, you can safely get to work. To do this, a hole is made in the side of the pumpkin. Through the hole, remove the seeds and pulp of the pumpkin and wash it well.
Wash the pumpkin with a 1:10 whitewash or manganese solution. After that the pumpkin is well washed with clean water and dried.
Make two small holes in the top and thread them through with a wire or string, so that the birdhouse can be hung up. It is desirable to paint the gourd with light latex paint.
At the bottom you need to make a few small holes for ventilation.
Birdhouse from plastic bottles
From plastic five-liter bottles, you can also make a birdhouse, but it should be painted with light acrylic paint, so that the birds were not hot.
You can use the neck of the bottle as a flyer. Place such a birdhouse horizontally. You can place the bottle vertically and cut the swallow with a knife.
In this case, the edges of the cut should be covered with plasticine, clay or putty, so that birds do not hurt themselves on the sharp edges.
How to hang a birdhouse correctly
- Birdhouse should be hung up to a height of no less than 3 meters.
- If you are going to hang a birdhouse on a tree, it is screwed to the tree with a wire. Nailed to the pole.
- Turn it so that the wind does not get into the hole.
- It is attached to the tree so that birds can fly into the house freely and the branches do not interfere with them.
A useful and necessary activity like making a birdhouse is fun for you and your feathered friends. If you involve children in the work, it will serve them a good education and the ability to take care of our little brothers.
