How to Draw a Book - Pencil and Cell Drawing Sketches

Drawing a book is not very difficult, but not too easy either. In terms of geometry, the figure of the book is similar to a parallelepiped. There are many instructions that detail how to draw a book step by step. It can be depicted in open and closed form.

Simplified image of a book

Let's draw a book without unnecessary details, leaving only the main lines. Let's draw a half-open book in a hardcover:

  1. Set the height of the book. To do this, draw a vertical line.
  2. Draw the top pages of the book. From the top and bottom edge draw curved lines to the right and left side.
  3. Let's picture the spine of the book. At the bottom of the vertical line draw a drop.
  4. Make a page stack. From the spine derive curved lines, repeating the top. Connect the top.
  5. Draw the edge of the sheets. They will mark the side vertical lines. Slightly incline them toward the spine.
  6. Draw the cover. From below curved lines draw straight lines, then trace them.

The book is drawn.

A book with a paperback.

Draw another open book, but with a paperback:

  1. Draw a vertical line representing the spine. From both vertices draw arcs in both directions. Connect the points with vertical lines to make two unfolded sheets of paper. Under them depict two more sheets of paper.
  2. Draw the sheets of paper below the top ones.

The drawing is complete.

The book in closed form

Now let's draw the book in closed form.

  1. Draw a rectangle with an inclination in relation to the borders of the sheet.
  2. From each corner lead down vertical lines of equal length - this is the height of the book.
  3. Draw parallel straight lines between the three ends of the verticals.
  4. Draw a rim on the inside of the cover along the edges.
  5. From the top right corner draw a straight line and create the contour of the pages. Without going all the way up, lift it.
  6. Paint the rim.

The image is ready.

Pencil sketch of a book

Let's create a pencil drawing of a book on a sheet of paper. This will be a simple pencil sketch. Draw the book as it is closed:

  1. Draw a rectangle. This is the cover of the book.
  2. Create the sides of the book, drawing vertical lines down from each corner.
  3. Draw parallel lines, connecting the ends of the verticals.
  4. Draw the binding, making the lines smoother.
  5. Draw the pages of the book. Erase the right rear vertical line and draw it on a small indentation. From it draw a line parallel to the bottom line.
  6. Erase unnecessary lines that should not be visible behind the figure.
  7. Create shadows in the figure. Shading the spine, increasing the pressure to the upper boundary and approaching the front. Light strokes fill the cover. Create the texture of the pages. Oblique strokes create a shadow of the cover.

Image of the book in a realistic graphics is done. The book is closed and lies on the table.

Let's make another sketch of the book. Here it will be in the open form:

  1. Draw a big square in the middle of the sheet of paper. This is the base of the future book.
  2. Indenting 2 cm, draw a line parallel to the bottom side of the square. In the middle of the tape draw a rectangle of small width. This is the spine of the book.
  3. Rounded spine. To do this we draw an arc between two points of the rectangle. Above it draw another arc.
  4. Draw diagonals from the right and left corners of the tape to the base of the spine. These are the bottom edges of the cover.
  5. Because of perspective, the lying book should be depicted as a trapezoid. The top (removed) side should be shorter than the bottom. On the upper side we make a small indentation from the edges and draw diagonal lines leading to the bottom corners.
  6. Erase unnecessary lines, that is, the remnants of the upper and lower rectangle. That leaves us with a trapezoid.
  7. Divide the resulting shape of the book into two equal parts. Draw lines from the top corners, parallel to the bottom.
  8. Erase the top horizontal line and the middle line. It turns out the cover of the book.
  9. Draw the contour of the pages. Draw a vertical line from the cover at an angle of 120 °. The longer it is, the thicker the book is. From her draw an arched line and lead it to the spine.
  10. Circle the line cover, to show the prominent edge.
  11. Give the pages volume. Just below the middle of the slant, showing the thickness of the pages, draw a line parallel to the cover. Without bringing it to the end, create an angle with the bottom edge of the cover. From the corner lead an arc to the bottom edge of the book spine.
  12. Draw the top pages. By design they are slightly open. From the top corner between the arc and the slant, we draw down a parallel to the cover. Again we do not bring it to the end, rounded and lead to the spine. Do the same several times, going down an incline.
  13. Create a hatch on a page stack. Paint the cover and spine.

The result is an elaborate drawing that shows the unfolded book.

Color pencil drawing

Let's draw with colored pencils an antique book. Let's make the image colorful and saturated.

It is worth paying special attention to drawing the cover, as this is the most visible detail of the drawing, which can be given any pattern and color.

On the front, publishers display the theme of the book, write the title, the author, and set the appropriate design:

  1. Draw the cover of the book. Draw a parallelogram with the upper side sloping to the right and the lower side sloping to the left. Draw parallel lines to the right and bottom sides of the book.
  2. Draw the spine and page edges with curved lines to the left. The thicker the book, the longer the lines should be.
  3. Let's represent the individual pages in the stack of pages. To do this we will make horizontal strokes across the entire thickness of the book.
  4. Let's give the cover a certain look. You can make it monochrome or apply a certain pattern. You can create a frame around the perimeter of the cover. If it is a children's book, draw illustrations on it.
  5. Think of the name of the book and the font. Draw the letters you want, sloping to the right.
  6. Draw the borders of the picture with a black marker.
  7. Use color to show that the book is many years old. We stroke the pages in red and orange, showing their antiquity and dilapidation.
  8. Paint the cover of the book in the desired colors.

The result is a beautiful drawing of a vintage book. The color scheme of the pages emphasizes their antiquity.

Drawing a book on the cells

Cells orientation allows you to make the lines even. For this work, you can take a notebook sheet of paper or spaced plain sheet. When drawing, you should use a marker. For the main outline it is worth taking a black marker:

  1. Mark the upper border of the background of the drawing. We put a point approximately in the upper third of the sheet.
  2. Count five cells down from it. On the sixth, we put a point. This is the top edge of the book.
  3. From it count down twelve squares. We shade each of them. This is the book cover.
  4. Go back to the top of the cover. Go one cell up and to the right diagonally and paint over it. Then go one more cell up and to the right and paint it too.
  5. Then we paint two more cells, going up diagonally. We do this twice.
  6. The last time we mark four cells. Now we have to go to the bottom side of the book.
  7. Go up one cell, three times for two and once for three. We do the same as with the top part: fill them all with black marker.
  8. We draw a vertical line between the last filled cells. We have finished the right half of the book.
  9. Repeat the same on the other side of the vertical line. We have a complete book spread.
  10. Picture the inside of the cover, visible from under the pages. From the top edges indent one cell down, then paint two cells, heading to the side. Go down to the bottom edge and do the same. Connect the two outermost squares on either side with a vertical line.
  11. Going down one cell from the bottom border, paint the cells parallel.
  12. Paint the cover of the book. It is desirable to choose any color other than black (for example, brown). This will highlight the cover in the drawing and separate it from the pages.
  13. We make inscriptions on the pages of the book by painting the cells diagonally and horizontally. It is possible to make an illustration by painting the clusters of cells in other colors.

This image does not look too much like a real book. But, nevertheless, the main lines are conveyed in the tradition of pixel graphics.

Using such step-by-step instructions, anyone can learn to draw a book. With proper diligence, even a small child can do it.
